More stills From “Shepherd Moon” (2025)!!

For our 👽 eye effect, Maria and Michaela looked for practical ways to pull it off in camera, and it provided a fun challenge to get eye lights just right to not be too much, but not go full void of darkness!

We used @rosco_labs Dash light with diffusion bubble for the subtle eye pop💡

My hope was our soft low-key lighting helped provided a safe feeling of comfort with the two characters sharing a meal and an evening together.

We planned to completely overhaul the look of the apartment into a vaguely distant futuristic vibe that still feels warm and cozy.
The team worked incredible hard on the art department side of things with Naomi, Michaela’s and Maria putting the work in front of the camera!

Beyond grateful for my gaffer @zane.plaster and the G/E team for putting in some serious work in tight spaces.

Shooting into a double window corner (lovely reflections) and white walls had our work cut out for us!- shoutout to putting negative on almost the entire ceiling 😆

Couldn’t have done it without the amazing crew !!

Filming in location on the 5th (or 7th?) floor for 3 overnights is no joke!

Will be posting breakdown later!

Shepherd Moon was shown at the Film Invasion Film Festival in LA where I finally got to experience it in a proper theatre!

We got asked about the unique look of the “other world” and how we achieved that.
In Pre-pro we thought about using special filters, but the only one I ended up using was a .3 to .9 graduated ND for the top of frame to bring down the sky - to have darker skies to shade and adjust into orange.

In color / post- pro Maria, Michaela, @kootenaycolor and myself all worked to find the perfect shade of orange environment- while maintaining desirable skin tone.

Thankfully Max Goldberg had a set of the P+S Anamorphic Zooms and recommended them to try out for our film!
After researching I saw they’d give us the distance coverage(less lens changes in elements while also giving our sci fi film a beautiful look.

I used @cinetracer to make some storyboards to test focal lengths and framing for when we ventured out into the desert ☀️

Swipe to see BtS of us lugging all that equipment and keeping it safe from the sand! Potentially one of the most physically taxing shoot days in my book, but worth it :)

Was honored to be asked by Michaela and Maria to DP the film and was such a great challenge to rise to the occasion!

Always a joy to see everyone’s hard work - the way it was intended :)

Had a blast shooting these in the studio! We filmed everything horizontally as well as vertically so we constantly flipped our camera rig and shot everything at least twice!

If you want some backstory on this job here it is regarding post- production:
When I first shot this job and saw the initial cut/color - I felt like I failed as a DP.
That maybe what I shot, wasn’t as good as I thought I got during the shoot - seeing it all turn out, eh. I wasn’t planning on posting anything from it.

But after some edit changes, a new sound design by my amazingly talented friend Ethan Grafton and a switching the color workflow to my trusted colorist at @kootenaycolor I felt confident in my shots again and needless to say I’m excited to put this proj out there!
Goes to show you the power of good colorist and sound design makes all the difference.

One of my favorite setups was the top down rig, we attached a ronin 2 which gave us fine tune adjustments compared to a locked off shot. Art dept / makeup dept really made the shot shine with the hair design and made it unique.

These tests were with the Alexa 35 // 4.6K Open Gate iSO 800 // ND 1.2 with Arri Signature Primes (47mm) f/1.8

In a larger screen you can certainly tell the difference in grain size/ structure and feel.

I did “two best eight’s” bc I was DP’ing opposite extremes like bright, happy people in commercials or darker, moody vibes with grunge, spiderwebs and sometimes fire and they didn’t fit together - plus works better for 16x9

Lighting a bright sunny look for a full day can be challenging. With a little gripping and keeping that hard edge - thankfully Ryan was okay with my plea to shoot the wide LAST- like 4:30pm - that’s when the sun would peak Thru from the direction I wanted.
So this whole day we were hard edging with soft wrap in hopes this sun would peak through on the 13th floor. Thankfully it paid off and the plan worked.

Shoutout for the crew for putting in so much hard work to pull these looks off in DTLA
